EMBLEMATIC LITERATURE has
proven itself in recent years to be an essential tool for understanding
the cultural panorama of the Renaissance and Baroque. Its
all-encompassing nature, embracing diverse kinds of knowledge
and rhetorical procedures, makes it a vital instrument for
understanding other literary genres, and, given its iconographic and symbolic richness, for understanding the
plastic, architectural and ornamental arts as well. It is no
exaggeration to assert that in Spain, as well as in the rest of
Europe, Golden Age poetics cannot be properly defined if the
emblems that we publish here are not taken into consideration.
With this CD, for the first time all of
the emblem books produced by a European nation are available to
a reader. That is to say, we offer the complete edition
of this literary genre in Spain from its initial appearance in
the first half of the sixteenth century until the end of the
seventeenth: some 80 works, most of which have not been
reprinted since then.
Following the same criteria of all our editions, the
full text of the books has been scrupulously transcribed,
and a series of program tools allow
sophisticated searches. The texts are abundantly
annotated, with the sources of the mottoes of the
quotations. The emblem illustrations can be viewed along with
their searchable
iconographic descriptions, and we
have translated all the mottoes
and verse subscriptiones in Latin. Our edition is
bilingual, so that the reader can choose to consult it in
Spanish or English. More information on these aspects can be
found in the section of
Titles.
This first edition contains virtually all the emblem books written in
Spanish or translated into Spanish – including polyglot editions
– as well as the most important translations of these emblem
books into other European languages. In addition, we include, as
a special feature of this first edition, the monumental Emblemata regio-politica of Juan de
Solórzano Pereira, which we consider, although it is written in Latin,
a sine qua non of any attempt to analyze this
bibliography. The translation of this work into Spanish (1658)
will appear in the second edition.
Indeed, this CD will be followed by a
second edition in December 2005, which will include all the emblem books of Spanish authors written in
Latin. It will also contain books originally composed in other
languages and subsequently translated into Spanish, and all the translations of
Spanish emblem books into other languages. Finally, a series of
other complementary titles closely related to these works will
provide a true exhaustive overview of Spanish emblematics.
