The new energy emanating from the explosion of printing inspired Hans Holbein the Younger to recreate these scenes from the Old Testament. It was a time when Holbein was dedicating special attention to his graphical work, and when he was also working on his Dance of Death. His mastery in the conception of the images and his skill in executing the engravings resulted in numerous new editions in the sixteenth century with text in prose or verse, in several languages. Nevertheless, and in spite of the fact that there was also an edition in Spanish, this important work was slowly forgotten as part of the Spanish cultural tradition. We believe that this publication in the «Medio Maravedí» collection recuperates for Spanish Golden Age scholarship an interesting linkage between the bibliae pauperum, the illustrated books of devotion, art books and even emblems, due to their synthetic conjunction of word and image.
